Leander Stone Scholastic Academy (commonly referred to as "Stone Academy") is a magnet school in Chicago, Illinois. In 2010, Stone Academy was ranked #23 out of 250 best schools in Chicago by Chicago Magazine. In earlier years (the 1940s) the school was known simply as the Leander Stone Elementary School, at 6239 N. Leavitt St (2200 W), a short block north of Granville Ave (6200 N), opposite Thome Ave (~6239 N). It was then an ordinary elementary school, Grades 1-8. The school's namesake, Leander Stone (1831-1888), was born in Mercersburg, New York. At an early age he moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he grew up working on a farm. Stone later moved to Chicago, taking a position as a reporter for the ''Chicago Times''. He also served as principal of the Jones School, assistant editor of the Northwestern Christian Advocate, and a member of the Chicago Board of Education. ==References==
